On Mission Sunday, October 22nd 2017, the Archdiocese of Moncton celebrated in a special way the Golden Jubilee of the NGO “Development and Peace”. Two Daughters of Jesus, Srs Géraldine Parent and Rita Poirier, received a certificate of recognition.
Mission of Development and Peace
«Development and Peace» was established in 1967 by the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops in response to Pope Paul VI’s encyclical letter Populorum Progressio which stated : ‘‘Development is the new word for peace.”
The organization’s mission is to support partners in the global South who promote alternatives to unjust social, political and economic structures. With this in mind it helps the Canadian population to be more aware of the causes of poverty and to become involved in actions for change.
A festive Mass
To celebrate this jubilee, Archbishop Valéry Vienneau, surrounded by ten concelebrants, presided over the Sunday Eucharist, in the Church of Christ the King to which of all the parishioners of the archdiocese had been invited. The international choir of Moncton University provided a much appreciated multilingual animation for the celebration that was both prayerful and festive.
Recognition
We were then invited to a small reception in the basement of the church, where we shared afternoon tea and enjoyed precious moments of friendly conversation with old acquaintances and others, more recent. The president of the Diocesan Committee for Development and Peace gave us an overview of the activities in progress. He then presented certificates of recognition to seventeen people, including two Daughters of Jesus, Srs Géraldine Parent and Rita Poirier, who have participated in the activities of Development and Peace in the archdiocese for several years.
Working with others
Finding in “Development and Peace” echoes of our Rule of Life, we continue to be interested and to participate in the activities of this organization according to our possibilities.
In our concern for human development according to the Gospel principles, we collaborate with others to build a world of greater justice and brotherhood …”
