Monica was born in Arichat, Nova Scotia, May 10th 1931 in a family of six children. After one year of teaching experience in Lorne, N.B., she entered the novitiate in Trois-Rivières at the age of 18 and became a Daughter of Jesus in 1951.
Monica dedicated herself to the field of education for nearly 25 years, as a teacher or school principal. She first taught in Nova Scotia: in Cheticamp and L’Ardoise. In 1958-1959, she completed her Bachelor of Arts degree at St. Ann’s College in Church Point. The following year she went back to L’Ardoise and later to River Bourgeois as principal and teacher. Then she was appointed principal of the School in Dalhousie, New Brunswick, a service she provided for seven years.
From 1970 on, Monica also served as Provincial Councillor and Superior at the community of Dalhousie. After a year of religious studies in Montreal, she was appointed Provincial Superior in Moncton
.
Then she got involved in pastoral ministry, catechesis and adult religious education in Sydney and then in Arichat. At the age of 62, she answered a call to go out on mission in Jamaica, West Indies, where she did pastoral ministry for ten years.
Monica came back in 2003 and, after a sabbatical year in Charlo, she resumed pastoral ministry in the surroundings of Charlo and Dalhousie. She felt at home in this type of commitment that allowed her to be involved in the advancement of adults through the deepening of the faith received in baptism and education in general. Journeying with others was a personal enrichment and a challenge and she was grateful to the Lord for his call and his faithfulness.
In 2008, Monica came to live in the community on Williams Street in Moncton, and in 2010 she moved to Riverview with the other sisters. There, Monica continued to be interested in adult religious education at the parish level, was a member of the pastoral parish council, got involved in the formation of catechumens, and frequently visited with our sick sisters until she had serious health problems which she assumed with remarkable serenity.
Monica was an intelligent and serious woman, who was very interested in what went on in society at both national and international levels. She was also a woman of character and decision. She loved reading, music, and nature.
On March 7th, 2024, she passed away trusting fully in the God who had called her and whom she had served with courage and generosity. She was 92 years old and in her 72nd year of religious life. May she now be welcomed into the joy, love, and peace of God.
