Dominica has geothermal resources sufficient to meet its own energy needs.
Positive Impact
For Dominica, geothermal energy helps reduce electricity bills, lower greenhouse gas emissions, and strengthen energy independence.

By harnessing its volcanic resources, Dominica can stabilize its energy costs and attract foreign investment. This will improve its national energy security by reducing its dependence on imported fossil fuels, strengthen its resilience to climate change through disaster-resistant infrastructure, and significantly reduce its carbon emissions. Furthermore, it could enable the export of energy to neighboring islands such as Guadeloupe and Martinique.
Negative Impact
Geothermal development in the Roseau Valley has negative repercussions on ecotourism, disrupts community life, and affects infrastructure. Hot springs are threatened due to the depletion of the water table.

Noise and traffic will disrupt residents’ daily lives, and local waterways are at risk of sedimentation. The loss of farmland requires compensation, and power outages occur during testing of the electrical grid.
